The penultimate club competition this weekend was the Arthur Banbury Cup which should have been a doubles knock-out competition; however due to many of the Sunday regulars being at Pennfields (more on that later), it was played as a doubles American. The bowling was good, and the scores were tight all the way through. In the final game Pat Bell and Paul Walker could have won the trophy; but lost ...to Daniel and Jason Tudor 9-11 leaving them stranded on 51 points. That left Bill Baugh/ Colin Yates tied with Debbie Tudor/ Alan Price on 52 points scored. On count-back though, it was Debbie and Alan who had conceded less shots, so they topped the table and took the title; hard luck to Bill and Colin but congratulations to Debbie and Alan! Well bowled all! Sunday 14th September
The 4th American was played this afternoon for the Stan Hussey Memorial Trophy. Great weather and good (and good humoured) competitive bowling was the order of the day; and there was a tense moment in one of the qualifying groups when the winners had to be decided on "count back" following identical "scores for". Unfortunately for Ray Nicklin and Alan Hinton, they lost out to Jason Tudor and Tom Burch having conceded more shots, leaving Jason and Tom to contest the final against the winners of the other group, Billy Baugh and Jackie Hinton. The final started well for Jason and Tom, but then Jackie and Bill came back and made a good game of it, until finally Jason and Tom made the early advantage count and took the trophy. Well bowled all, and thanks to Les Phillips for running the competition in Chris's absence.
Sunday 7th September
Pro-am 2014, raising money for High Flyers! As Ken Dodd would say, "What a beautiful day..."! So much to cover, so here goes: Congratulations to John Melia and Jo Clews who were this years Champions, beating Alison Morgan and Stu Thomas in a hard fought final, with plenty of superb bowling on display. All credit to Jo and Stu in particular; as non-bowlers they led superbly to their blocks and set the standard for John and Allie to match!! Congratulations too to Ian Bett and Martin Lavender, winners of the Consolation Cup on the second green, with commiserations to the beaten finalists Les Phillips and Ivan Baugh. Good bowling throughout both competitions, and the wins were well deserved. However, we hope that the real winners were High Flyers. By the end of the day we have raised £1,227 and there is still money to come in. We hope our contribution helps such a fantastic local charity who do outstanding work - and the cakes they made us were delicious!! Thanks to everyone for their generous support and for making it a day to remember. See you next year, well bowled everyone!!!
Sunday 31st August
Sunday 24th August was schedule to be a ladies and gents doubles to run alongside one another, due again to low numbers it was decided to run the Harry Goodman 3rd American. Glyn Phillips and Barbara Evanson went on to win the title, with a knockout for second place between Jackie Phillips and Pat Bell against Bill Baugh and Tom Burch with Bill and Tom Taking the runner up prize.
It was the Rose Bowl that was up for grabs and although the weather was great, the turn out was disappointing with only 20 entrants (10 couples). Nevertheless the bowling was good, and Debbie Tudor and Colin Yates made their way to the final where they met Alan Hinton and Glynn Phillips who had been in impressive form. However it was Debbie and Colin who triumphed 21-11 to win the match and take the trophy. Well bowled!
Sunday 17th August
The baking summer continues and there was some top quality bowling today in the Ladies Handicap Singles and the Men's Saddlers Cup Handicap. Regrettably, numbers were low for the Ladies competition, so the afternoon was run as a joint competition with the top Lady and top Gent taking the honours. Barbara Hilditch battled her way through to take the Ladies Cup; Alan Hinton prevailed in the men's competition. Congratulations to both, well bowled!!
Sunday 27th July
Congratulations to Connah Warr, the winner of the inaugural competition for the Evans Halshaw Ford Trophy! Connah met Alan Hinton in the final during a scorching afternoons bowling, and continued with the same high quality play that took him there in order to triumph 21-8 and be the first name on our sponsor's trophy. Club Captain Chris Hayward starts the final in our photo, hard luck to runner-up Alan; well bowled Connah!
Sunday 20th July 2014
Everybody enjoyed the bowling and the camaraderie this afternoon during the competition for the Iris Tunstall Trophy. Run as an American, two groups of seven were whittled down to our finalists, Andy Warr and David Farquharson v Donna Warr and Jacky Phillips, with Andy and David taking the honours 21-14 in a game that was a lot closer than the score suggested. Jack Tunstall started the final and us seen here with the winners and runners up. On behalf of the Tunstall family thank you all for making it another special day!
Sunday 15th June
Due to low numbers this Sunday's Ladies cup and the John Gibb memorial merged into a mixed singles knockout, the weather stayed fine but for one shower and Bill Baugh and Colin Yates got through to the final. Colin set up a good lead but Bill brought it back up to a close finish with Colin taking the title with only a few points in it.
Sunday 8th June
Congratulations to the 2014 Club Champion, Andy Warr! A perfect summer afternoon saw the Club Championship decided and there was some good bowling throughout. Eventually the challengers were whittled down to our two finalists, Andy and Vicky Cooper, with Andy taking the win and the title. Well bowled both!
Sunday 1st June
The Vera Fones Target Bowls singles title was won this afternoon by Tom Burch, who beat Alan Hinton in a final of two halves. Alan took an early lead and looked well placed to take the title, but Tom fought back with a strong second half showing to take the win. Well bowled Tom!
Sunday 25th May 2014
A wonderful summers day today for the Walker Memorial competition, and the bowling was hot too! Congratulations to the victors Tom and Irene Burch who not only lead to their block superbly, but found winners at the back when they needed them too; commiserations to runners up Ben Fieldhouse (Snr) and Keith Pollit who pushed them all the way. Well bowled all!
Sunday 18th May 2014
The first American (the Bob Whitehouse Memorial) was played on 27 April and was a very enjoyable afternoon interrupted by a few April showers. Congratulations to Barbara Evanson and Les Phillips who won a tight and tense final 21-20 against Jack and Jason Tudor. The rain was falling as the final finished, so a photo wasn't really possible - the winners mug shots will be taken on a sunnier day and added.
The Easter Egg competition on the 20th April was soon in the Warrs... Andy and Connah Warr to be exact! Well done and thanks for sharing the chocolate....(not)! Photo to follow!
Congratulations to Keith Pollit and Ray Nicklin who became the first Sunday Competition winners of 2014, clinching the Express and Star Doubles trophy. Keith and Ray played excellently all afternoon, and took the silverware with a well deserved 21-14 win in the final against Connah Warr and Jason Tudor. Thanks to all 20 entrants for your support and to the weather for holding off too.
